Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) welcomed Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) to the Sheaffer Center on Saturday afternoon. The Lions (10-2, 2-2) were able to get their second straight win in Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) play and fourth straight win overall after they blew past OPSU (3-8, 0-4) by the score of 87-57.

Nyk Mason scored 22 in blowout against OPSU

Top Performers

  • Nyk Mason ( SO/Frisco, TX ) led all scorers with 22 points on 11-15 shooting.
  • There were three other Lions in double figures, Kentton Williams ( SR/Levelland, TX ), Cody Farmer ( SO/ San Antonio, TX ), and Josh Kashila ( JR/ Euless, TX ) all scored 11 points.
  • Kentton Williams also led SAGU in rebound (8) and assists (6).
  • SAGU dominated the paint scoring 42 points.
  • The Lions’ bench played a pivotal role in the outcome of the game as they added 37 points.
  • SAGU made the Aggies pay for their mistakes as they turned 27 turnovers into 28 points.
  • The Lions were stingy of defense totaling 25 steals. They shared the ball well posting 277 assists.

Lions Review

  • Williams got the Lions on the board early tying the game 2-2.
  • Kashia scored 5 straight points to give SAGU an 11-6 lead with under 15:00 minutes left in the half.
  • Mason scored 10 of the next 13 points to give the Lions a 24-12 advantage with 7 minutes left in the half.
  • SAGU pieced together a 17-5 run to take a commanding 41-19 lead into halftime.
  • Mason capped off another 16-8 SAGU scoring run with a dazzling windmill dunk to push the margin to 55-27 with 14:26 left in the game.
  • OPSU didn’t score for the next 5 minutes as SAGU saw their lead balloon to 70-27 with 9:14 remaining.
  • Coach Deal cleared his bench and got quality minutes for his entire bench. They were able to hold their own as they maintained the lead. SAGU scored a solid team win with a 30-point victory 87-57.

SAGU (10-2, 2-2) is in the thick of SAC play and will travel to Bethany, OK to in search of their next win as they take on Southwestern Christian University (8-2, 2-1) on Thursday, January 9 th at 7:45.
