Houghton, New York- November 13, 2015- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) cross country teams are in Houghton, New York preparing to compete in the 2015 National Christian College Athletics Associations (NCCAA) Cross Country National Championships .  Both the men’s and women’s teams will compete.

SAGU cross country coach Jason Covarrubias is hopeful that SAGU may have All-American finishers, “We believe that Destiny Garza has the potential of competing for an All-American Award (Top 10 overall) and the entire women’s team can finish in the Top 15.The Men’s team also has a couple of hopefuls with Jerry Nava and Walker Loyd who have the potential of competing for All-American Honors.  The men’s team is shooting for the Top 10.”

Five members of the women’s team qualified; Destiny Garza, Julie Alvarez, Genny McCullough, Markia Sanders and Kelly Cook .  Six athletes from the men’s side qualified; Jerry Nava, Gabriel Price, Walker Loyd, Adrian Cedillo, Brad Beimler and Eric Jones .

This is the third year in a row SAGU has qualified a full men’s team and the second time for the women to compete (2013, 2015).  In 2014 the men’s team finished 15 th out of 19 teams.  They raced on a frigid and snowy course.

Last year as a sophomore Destiny Garza finished 30 th in the nation with a time of 19:42.3.  Garza ran at a 6:21 pace per mile.  Despite battling an injury, then-freshman Kelly Cook finished at 21:34.2, coming in 88 th out of 117 athletes.

The race is on Saturday, November 14, 2015.  Both teams will compete at 11:00am at Field of Dreams Cross Country Course at Houghton College.
