Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Women’s Basketball team took to the court to host Mid-American Christian University (MACU) on Thursday night. This was the Lady Lions (11-11, 6-9) second meeting with the Evangels (17-8, 9-6) with the first coming down to the wire as MACU squeaked by with an 86-83 win. SAGU was able to even up the season series as they took the victory by the score of 76-74.

Top Performers

  • Lexi Rich ( SR/San Antonio, TX ) scored a game-high 38 points,
  • Kiara Glenn ( JR/Ennis, TX ) scored 22 points and Sydney Meador ( JR/Denton, TX ) pitched in 10 points of her own.
  • Meador and Phillipa Greene ( JR/Freeport, Bahamas ) lead the Lions in rebounding with 9 boards.
  • MACU outrebounded SAGU 41-35.
  • SAGU shot 42% (28-66) including 39% (11-28) from behind the arc.
  • The Lady Lions took advantage of their offensive rebounds as they held a 20-13 advantage in second-chance points.

Lions Review

  • MACU scored the first 5 points of the game before Glenn got SAGU on the board.
  • Rich cashed in from beyond the arc to tie the game 5-5.
  • Glenn and Meador hit two three-pointers to give SAGU an 18-14 lead with 1:16 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Evangels got off to a quick start in the second quarter to take a 23-18 lead.
  • The Lady Lions got beat to a couple of loose balls and it allowed MACU to build a 34-24 advantage halfway through the second quarter.
  • SAGU battled back to cut the margin to 36-33 but were called for a couple of late fouls as MACU took a 38-33 lead into halftime.
  • Rich hit back-to-back three-pointers to open the second half energizing the Lady Lions. They cut the lead to 42-39 in the process.
  • The Evangels pushed the lead back to 51-43 with 6:43 left.
  • SAGU put together an 11-4 run to draw within one point of the lead at 55-54 with 3:16 left in the third quarter.
  • The Lady Lions were shut out the rest of the quarter as the Evangels took a 64-54 lead into the final quarter.
  • Meador hit a bucket to bring SAGU back within three points at 68-65 with 5:51 left in the game.
  • MACU seemed to have the answer once again as they pushed the lead to 74-67 with just over four minutes left in the game.
  • The Lady Lions closed the game on a 9-0 run capped by a runner in the lane by Rich to seal the deal for SAGU.

What’s Next

SAGU will now turn their focus to The University of Science & Arts (Okla.). The Lady Lions will play the Drovers on the road on Saturday February 15 th at 2:00 pm.
