Dallas, Texas- November 1, 2015- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball team improved to 2-0 for the season after topping Paul Quinn College, 65-57. SAGU was Paul Quinn’s first game of the season as well as their homecoming game.
“It was the definition of both a great win and an ugly win,” says head SAGU coach Donnie Bostwick , “We finished like a winner though and that is a great sign.”
PQC got the early lead on the Lions, jumping to a 9-0 start within the first five minutes of play. They lead for the entire first half and went into halftime up 27-19.
With nine minutes left in the game, PCQ led by 10 points. SAGU’s Isaak Rowe made two free throws, followed by a made basket by Elbert Lawrence . After a timeout, Keyunta Watkins hit a three pointer, making the game 49-45. The Lions then had a steal and a bucket by Lawrence.
Paul Quinn was able to answer with their own basket made by Blake Ervin . SAGU was then able to tie the game, 51-51, with 4:06 left, after a three-point shot was made by Lawrence.
Tyler Pate was able to score, giving the Lions the two point lead with 3:06 left to play. From that point on, SAGU was able to build their lead.
“Road wins are often ugly, especially early in the season, but it was great watching our guys pull together and keep their faith,” says Bostwick.
Keyunta Watkins scored 17 points, Isaak Rowe scored 11 and Emmanuel Adoyi added 10. Adoyi also had seven rebounds and Markey Young had six.
On Tuesday, November 3, 2015 the Lions will host Wiley College at 8:00pm.
