Waxahachie, Texas—January 27th, 2018—The Southwestern Assemblies of God University Baseball Lions opened the 2018 season with two wins and two losses to Randall University. The Lions are 2-2 in the early season.

Game 1 (L 3-2)

Augie Martinez pitched and gave up two hits with one earned run. Randall’s run came off a triple in the gap and then a ground ball to score him.  The SAGU lions had opportunities to score but didn’t convert until the 7th inning.

Jake Clary came in to pitch in the 6th with two outs and a runner on 2nd. A Randall base hit up the middle was misplayed by Damian Garcia and the ball rolled all the way to the fence to score the runner and the batter reached third base. Another base hit scored him to have Randall go up 3-0.  

In the 7th inning the Lions battled hard to score two runs off, one of the bat of freshman Dacota Kauffman then Ethan Gernier hit a sac fly to deep center to score Derrick Clement. With the tying run on third, clean up hitter Jake Payonk couldn’t score and the game ended 3-2.
 Game 2 (W 6-3)

In the second game, Andrew Ruiz pitched lights out for six innings.In the bottom of the second inning, the Lions went up 2-0 on scores from Jake Payonk, who was the lead off with a walk, Payonk stole second. Tanner Lindle scored him on a base hit down the line. Jared Anderson then hit a ball down the line and got a double and was able to reach third on a past ball and then scored on a balk.
In the 4th inning Randall scored two, but the Lions would score two more of their own in the bottom of the inning. Isiah Danier started the inning off with a base hit ultimately getting to third on a wild pitch and bad pick off to second. Derrick Clement was hit by a pitch to reach first base and Ethan Gernier hit a double in the gap to score both.
Randall would score again in the sixth due to an error in right field. In the sixth inning Mark Martinez led off with a walk and Houston Johnson came in to pinch run for him.  Coach Blackman then sent in Griffin Glenn to pinch hit and Glenn hit a double in the gap that was misplayed and would score the runner. Andrew Diaz pinch hit and got his first collegiate hit with an RBI for the Lions. In the seventh, Damian Garcia came in to shut the door for a three out save and the Lions came out on top 6-3.

SAGU would go on to win game 3 on Saturday by a score of 20-2.
