Waxahachie, Texas – March 20 th , 2018 – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Baseball team played NAIA Division II ranked #5 Oklahoma Wesleyan University (OWU) in a double header Tuesday afternoon.

Game 1:

SAGU fell to a bit of a slump in game one. OWU took the lead from the start with 5 runs in the top of the first inning. SAGU achieved getting their first run of the game in the 6 th inning. Derrick Clement pinched ran for Griffin Glenn. Clement made his way around the bases throughout the inning until Case Harrell’s single to third brought the RBI. SAGU lsot 12-1 in game one.

Game 2:

Game 2 started off just as game one did with OWU scoring the first few runs in the game with 4 in the 2 nd and 3 in the 3 rd inning. SAGU capitalized in the 3 rd with 4 runs coming from Houston Johnson, Jake Payonk, Griffin Glenn, and Dacota Kauffman. OWU went on to schore 1 in the 4 th and 5 in the top of the 6 th inning. SAGU’s Houston Johnson managed to get on more run in in the bottom of the 6 th . OWU score 2 final points in the top of the 7 th making the score 15-5. SAGU went into the last inning with a bang. The Lions put up 6 runs. Steely Gill brought Blake Lewis and himself with a 2 run homerun. Derrick Clement, Isai Diermier, Jake Payonk, and Griffin Glenn also scored in this inning. The final score of the game was 15-11.

Assistant Coach Raul Castro stated “The guys battled hard to bring the game within 4 runs. We’re a young team that just went toe-to-toe with the #5 team in the nation. We made a good jump forward as a team. These were big games from our offensive charge led by Isai Diermier, Jake Payonk, Griffin Glenn and Steely Gill.”

The SAGU Baseball team moves to 8-22 overall and 1-14 in conference play. The Baseball team’s next game will be a Conference double header on the road in Goodwill, Oklahoma against Oklahoma Panhandle State University on March 30 th 2018, at 1:00 and 4:00 P.M.
