Fort Worth, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Men’s Basketball team was back in action on Tuesday night in a very important Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) game against Texas Wesleyan University (TXWU). The Lions (21-6, 13-6) lost again to the Rams (20-8, 13-5) this time by the score of 92-87. The loss drops the Lions a game behind TXWU in the SAC standings.

Nyk Mason scored 33 points against TXWU

Top Performers

  • Nyk Mason ( SO/Frisco, TX ) led all players with 33 points.
  • Josh Kashila ( JR/Euless, TX ) logged a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Darian Davis ( SR/Garland, TX ) pitched in 13 points as the only other SAGU player to reach double figures.
  • SAGU shot 48% (32-66) from the field including 36% (9-25) from behind the arc.
  • The Rams crushed the Lions on the boards 47-35.
  • TXWU dominated the paint 40-24.

Lions Review

  • Noah Boling ( FR/ Van Alstyne, TX ) hit the first three-pointer of the game for SAGU, but TXWU started off fast to take an 8-3 lead.
  • Back-to-back triples by Kentton Williams ( SR/Levelland, TX ) and Davis cut the deficit to 15-11 in favor of the Rams with 13:43 to go in the first half.
  • Kashila scored 6-of-8 points for SAGU to bring the Lions within one point at 28-27.
  • Both teams traded triples on three-straight possessions as the Rams continued to lead 34-30 with 6:34 left before the break.
  • Mason went on a 7-0 run on his own to give SAGU their first lead.
  • The teams would trade baskets and the lead late in the half, but it was ultimately Davis that gave a 46-44 lead at halftime.
  • The Lions extended the lead to 50-44, but TXWU put together a huge 18-4 run to open up a 62-54 lead with 12:00 minutes to play.
  • The Rams bumped the lead out to 13 points on two different occasions.
  • Mason cut it down to 79-72 with under five minutes to play.
  • Howard Turner ( FR/Detroit, MI ) got the Lions closer at 74-79, the closest SAGU had been since there was 12:41 to go in the second half.
  • Boling hit a huge triple to cut it to a one-possession game (81-79) with 2:38 left in regulation.
  • Mason nailed a critical three-pointer with :15 left to draw the Lions back within two at 89-87, but TXWU went 3-4 from the charity stripe to clinch the win.

What’s Next

SAGU comes home for two home games to end their regular season. The first game against Bacone (Okla.) will be at the Sheaffer Center on Thursday February 27 th beginning at approximately 7:45 pm.
