Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Women’s Basketball team welcomed in John Brown University (JBU) on Senior Day. The Lady Lions (14-14, 8-12) closed their regular season the right way sending their only Senior Lexi Rich ( SR/San Antonio, TX ) off with a win over the Golden Eagles (9-20, 5-15) by the score of 76-74.

Top Performers

  • Rich became the all-time leading scorer in SAGU Women’s Basketball history as she led the Lady Lions in scoring once again with 32 points.
  • Alexis Casher ( JR/Irvington, AL ) held down the paint as she racked up another double-double scoring 13 points and snatching 13 rebounds.
  • Sydney Meador ( JR/Denton, TX ) (16) and Tamera Derrough ( SO/Mansfield, TX )(14) also cracked double-figure scoring for the Lady Lions.
  • SAGU shot 42% (28-66) from the field including 33% (8-24) from behind the arc.
  • SAGU lost the rebounding battle 35-34, as each team claimed 9 offensive boards.

Lions Review

  • SAGU hopped out to a quick lead over JBU as they put together a 14-5 run to open the game.
  • JBU answered with a 10-2 run of their own to find themselves down 16-15 halfway through the quarter.
  • Rich scored the last 8 points of the quarter for SAGU which included three triples to give the Lady Lions a 26-24 lead moving into the second quarter.
  • The teams battled back and forth as JBU took a 31-30 lead and continued to create separation as they pushed it out to 39-32.
  • Another Rich triple cut the lead to 41-37 with 2:32 left before half.
  • Meador was fouled on a three-pointer late in the quarter and knocked them all down to cut the deficit to 45-42 at the break.
  • Meador scored two quick baskets to regain the lead.
  • The team traded the lead a few times over the next several minutes but found themselves tied 54-54 with 2:45 left in the quarter.
  • A couple of late free throws by JBU gave them a 59-58 point lead heading into the final quarter.
  • A clutch bucket by Derrough tied the game once again at 64-64 with 6:26.
  • SAGU would steal the lead back on another Rich bucket 70-69 with 3:07 left in the game.
  • JBU battled back to take the lead 74-72 with 0:53 seconds left.
  • With the game on the line, Rich drained a clutch triple to put the Lady Lions back on top. She added a late free-throw to give SAGU the 76-74 win.

What’s Next

SAGU will travel to play Wayland Baptist University in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Tournament on Tuesday with the time TBA.
