Waxahachie, Texas — April 3, 2013 — Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) annually hosts Royal Family Kids Camp (RFKC). The film “CAMP,” based on true stories from RFKCs nationwide, will be released at ShowBiz Cinema 12 in Waxahachie on Friday, April 5. The film will show for one week, and 40% of ticket sale profits will go to SAGU’s Summer 2013 RFKC.
“CAMP” writer and director Jacob Roebuck says, “The movie is based on the experience of RFKC campers and counselors, including the camp held locally here in Dallas.”
He continues, “When I volunteered at a camp just like the one in Dallas, I saw the huge need for people to step up and love these abused and neglected children. There is no other medium like a movie that can entertain and encourage people to become engaged.”
On his 10th birthday, Eli is placed in a foster home after being abused by his father. Meanwhile, to impress a potential new client, investment advisor Ken Matthews signs up to be a camp counselor and gets paired with the troubled Eli. Once at camp, Ken struggles between his self-serving motives and Eli’s need for unconditional love. After painful revelations, Ken is forced to take drastic measures to earn back Eli’s trust.
“The movie ‘CAMP’ is powerful, and it’s powerful because it’s true. What I love most about the movie is that it gives the hard truth of what our kids have been through, and what we as volunteers seek to accomplish,” said Steffanie Gerbereux, a Dallas camp volunteer.
“Our hearts break and bleed for these kids, and through this movie, it is my hope that others will want to be a part of such an amazing ministry.”
In addition to playing at ShowBiz Cinema 12 in Waxahachie, the film will open in 8 cities in Nebraska, Kansas, Indiana, Colorado and California this weekend and has already opened in 25 cities since its release. The movie is scheduled to play in around 100 theaters during its limited-release run this spring.
The film was produced by Roebuck Media, a privately-held Limited Liability Company (LLC) specializing in films that entertain, edify and inspire audiences. Their first feature, “Coyote County Loser,” was distributed by CURB entertainment and Monarch Home Video, and is available on DVD, BluRay, Netflix and iTunes digital download. SAGU alumnus Donovan Fulkerson is an associate producer for the film.
Royal Family Kids, Inc., is a non-profit organization and is the nation’s leading network of camps for abused, neglected and abandoned children. RFKC mobilizes local churches to sponsor one-week camps for abused and neglected children ages 7-11 in their local community. Each camp has two goals: make positive childhood memories for the kids and let them experience unconditional love from an adult.
SAGU hosted its first camp the summer of 2011. Thirty-eight children attended and 41 SAGU students, staff and faculty served as volunteers. In 2012, more than 100 volunteers served 76 children in attendance. The 2013 camp will be held at SAGU this summer and is being directed by SAGU professor Darren Daugherty.
