Waxahachie, Texas – August 19, 2014 – The fall athletics season has begun for the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions. Players for men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, football and men’s and women’s cross country arrived on SAGU’s campus last week for training camp. Over 220 fall athletes are enrolled for the fall semester.
“Our coaches have done a great job recruiting and we have seen the fruits of that as we head into the fall,” explains Athletic Director Jesse Godding, “We are having a little bit of logistical issues when it comes to locker rooms, especially for the soccer teams.”
The problem is a good one for the University as men’s soccer is bringing in more than a dozen from last year, women’s soccer is putting nearly 9 new spots on the roster, and football is up 25.
Last year was the inaugural season for cross country and only 180 athletes made up a roster for fall sports. This year marks the highest number of athletes brought in for fall training camp.
With the record number of athletes arriving and students enrolled, the university is looking forward to the school year. “This year’s record breaking number of Athletes correlates to what we hope will be another record breaking enrollment for SAGU. Student numbers across the board are on the rise, our dorms are full and we are excited to see what God is going to do on our campus this year,” says Vice-President for Enrollment and Retention Eddie Davis.
The first home game for men’s soccer is August 27, 2014 against Oklahoma Wesleyan . Women’s soccer hosts a scrimmage against Richland College on August 29, 2014. Volleyball will begin its season with a long away stretch before hosting their first home game against Oklahoma City University on September 15, 2014. Football will play Texas Lutheran on September 27, 2014 at Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie. Cross Country will run all away meets this season, with the first one being at McMurray University in Abilene, Texas on September 6, 2014.
