Waxahachie, Texas – June 3, 2016 – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Bible and Church Ministries professor Dr. Jeff Magruder provided a 2-day homiletics training workshop for 75 Army Chaplains assigned in Hawaii. For the second time in three years, Dr. Magruder has traveled to the Pacific to mentor, train, and coach military chaplains in the art of sermon craft and delivery.

Dr. Magruder shared, “I count it an honor to be able to help develop the preaching skills of those who minister to the men and women who serve our country. They are all attentive and eager to learn how to improve as communicators.”

In 2013, Dr. Magruder was the keynote trainer and facilitator at a homiletics conference hosted by the U.S. Army Pacific Command (USARPAC) in Oahu, Hawaii. Over 60 military chaplains attended the chaplain training event.

A military chaplain is a religious leader in the military that are responsible for tending to the religious and moral well-being of service members and their families. The chaplain’s responsibilities include everything from performing religious rites and conducting worship services to providing confidential counseling and advising commanders on religious, spiritual and moral matters.

Dr. Magruder received his D.Min. at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary where his doctoral advisor was Haddon Robinson. He is a speaker and has served as an interim pastor, youth pastor and pastor. His research interests involve the intersection of an expository preaching philosophy and Pentecostal spirituality. He has presented papers at the Society for Pentecostal Studies and the Evangelical Homiletics Society. His articles on preaching have appeared in The Pentecostal Educator, Preaching Magazine, Enrichment Journal, and The Preachers College. He is also a regular contributor to SAGU’s ThoughtHub blog website. Watch his video blog on How to Win Your Audience’s Attention for Your Sermon .
