Waxahachie, Texas- February 21, 2016- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball team lost to the top team in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC), Texas Wesleyan University (TWU). The final score was 78-65. TWU is currently ranked no. seven in the NAIA. The Rams are also 14-2 in the SAC and 23-4 overall. The Lions are now in a three-way tie for fourth place with a SAC record of 9-7.
The Lions came out of the gate ready to play and in the first half they held the slim lead. The Lions hit nine three-pointers in the first half alone. Five of those three pointers came from senior Jason Gentry . Gentry had 17 points in the first half. In the second half, the Rams were able to keep Gentry scoreless.
At halftime SAGU was in the lead, 35-34.
In the second half, TWU made the adjustments needed to keep the Lions to only five three-pointers.
TWU took the quick lead in the second half. The Lions were able to stay close and with 12:45 left in the game, Rishaad Alexander hit a three pointer to put SAGU up 46-44.
The Rams Sam Akano made one free throw, followed by a free throw miss that TWU picked up the offensive rebound. Next, BJ Batts hit a three pointer to go up by two. 30 seconds later Batts hit another three to make the score 51-46, Rams. For the remaining 10 minutes of the game, TWU stayed in the lead.
SAGU’s Jason Gentry scored 17 points for the Lions. Isaak Rowe had 13 points and eight rebounds. Keyunta Watkins scored 11 points.
TWU’s Dion Rogers scored 17 points. Eric Stubbs had 12 points.
On Thursday, February 25, 2016, SAGU will travel to play Wayland Baptist University . WBU is 16-11 overall and 8-8 in the SAC. Nearly one month ago, WBU topped SAGU 76-75 in a last second thriller. Game time is at 8pm.
