“Sometimes you just have to hand it to the other team,” admits SAGU head coach Donnie Bostwick , “LSUA is a top five team with so many scoring threats, both inside and out. We tried to take their inside game away and force challenged outside shots. Hayward Register had one of those career nights. He is 16/52 on the season from the 3pt line. He goes 9/12 and hit a big shot every time we made a run.”
The Lions did get off to a slow start. With 10 minutes left in the first half, SAGU was down 17-5. By halftime, the deficit grew to 20 with a score of 41-21.
SAGU’s game-plan was a little shaken up early on says Bostwick, “Losing Lance Tipton t he third play of the first half really hurt our offensive game plan. He can stretch the defense and is really good at executing sets and helping the offense flow. He took a finger to the eye. We got behind and panicked and stopped executing.”
SAGU was able to regroup in the second half and enter Tipton back into the mix and score a quick ten points in the first two minutes of play. Tipton had back-to-back three pointers in the quick run.
With 12:26 left in the game, SAGU cut LSUA’s lead to eight points after Tipton got an offensive rebound and put it back up. LSUA answered with a quick three pointer by Brandon Moss .
Isaak Rowe turned around to make a three of his own, only to have LSUA match it once again with a Hayward Register three. As Coach Bostwick said, it was the story of the night.
In the end, SAGU lost 76-66.
“I was proud we came out and competed the second half, forcing 30 turnovers shows that effort. We were just a play or two away from coming back. We used a lot of energy, but we had no answer for Register tonight. “
Hayward Register did have a career night against SAGU, scoring 29 points. The only other player for LSUA to score in double digits was Brandon Moss with 10 points.
SAGU was led by sophomore Isaak Rowe with 23 points, four assist and three steals. Keyunta Watkins had 10 points.
On Monday, November 21, 2016, SAGU will host Wiley College at 7pm. Nearly two weeks ago, WC beat SAGU 83-70.
