The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men and women soccer teams had impressive wins last night as the men winning 7-2 and the women by a score of 8-1 against Jarvis Christian College .
The men compiled a scoring fiasco with five different Lions scoring a goal on 4 assists from four different players. This would tie their season-high for goals in a game during the 2018-2019 season. Not only was this a high paced offensive game for the Lions but defensively as well with not allowing any shots on goal during the first half. Sophomore, Mazvita Chidarara scored his 4th goal of the season in the fourth minute of play to open up the game. Heriberto Diaz scored back to back goals in less than twenty minutes to give them a 3-0 lead and giving JCC no chance to come back. Diaz scored his 8th and 9th goal of the season to put him 6th in the nation for total goals on the season. Matthias Roth, Bryan Callejas , and Guillermo Estrada each had goals with the assists coming from Antonio Silva, Eduardo Sanchez, Chidarara, and Estrada. The Lions will have over a week rest before they start Sooner Athletic Conference play when Central Christian College comes to Waxahachie who has a 7-1 record so far. This game will be on 9/27 at 3 pm.
The Lady Lions replayed what the men did and played excellent on both sides, offensively and defensively. They only allowed 1 shot on goal combined to SAGU’s 16 shots netting 8 of them. Messly Navarro and Rachel Freed had field days during the game having a combined 5 goals and 4 assists between the two. Navarro had 2 goals and 3 assists keeping her in the top 20 nationally for total assists and points on the season. Freed had an assist to Yasmin Barbosa-Torres to go along with her hat trick, Freed comes in at 21st in the nation for total goals on the season with 7. Melissa Navarro and Aubrie Gough finished the second half with a goal each and completing the 8-1 win. The Lady Lions are 5-2-1 on the season with a two-game winning streak at the moment; they will play on 9/19 in a good matchup against Our Lady of the Lake who is 2-1.
