Bethany, OK – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) took on Southwestern Christian University (SCU) in another important Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) game Thursday night. The Lions (11-2, 3-2) were able to get a pivotal conference win over SCU (9-3, 3-2) and now find themselves tied for third place in the SAC standings. SAGU was clutch down the stretch and pulled out a 93-86 victory.

Nyk Mason scored 45 points in the win over SCU

Top Performers

  • Nyk Mason ( SO/Frisco, TX ) scored a game-high and season-high 45 points. He also added 9 rebounds.
  • Josh Kashila ( JR/Euless, TX ) was the only other Lion to score in double-figures as he registered a double-double (22 points, 11 rebounds).
  • SAGU shot a torrid 50% (31-62) from the field and 71% (25-35) from the free-throw line (16-20 by Mason)
  • The Lions dominated the glass with a 41-22 rebounding advantage.
  • SAGU got a number of easy baskets as they outscored SCU in the paint 44-32.

Lions Review

  • Mason, Kashila, and Darian Davis ( SR/Garland, TX ) each made a basket to open the game as the Lions led 6-4 with 16:42 to go in the 1 st half.
  • Mitch McMullen ( SR/ San Antonio, TX ) buried the first three-pointer of the game to put the Lions on top 11-7.
  • Back to back buckets by Kashila gave SAGU a 17-11 advantage, but SCU went on a quick 6-0 to tie the game at 17 halfway through the first half.
  • The teams went back and forth over the next ten minutes. They traded the lead 13 times until SCU took a 42-40 lead into halftime.
  • SCU hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the 2 nd half taking a 48-43 lead.
  • SAGU answered back with a couple of long-distance shots themselves as they trimmed the margin to 60-59 with 14:52 left.
  • Cody Farmer ( SO/San Antonio, TX ) hit a big shot from behind the arc to give SAGU a 71-69 lead with 10:20 remaining in the game.
  • Mason went on an amazing individual run as he scored 16 straight points for the Lions giving them the 87-79 advantage.
  • Kashila was able to hit a couple clutch free throws with:06 left to give SAGU the 93-86 victory.

What’s Next

The Lions (11-2, 3-2) will travel back to Waxahachie, TX for two home games against SAC competition. The first will come on Saturday, January 11 th at 6:45 against Oklahoma City University (8-4, 2-2).
