The first half the Lions had a strong showing. In the first quarter, SAGU’s JP Lowery had back-to-back touchdowns. He scored the first touchdown off a four-yard run and the second touchdown came from a two-yard run into the end zone. Lyon’s Osvaldo Espericueta kicked a field goal to make the score 14-3 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, SAGU quarterback Lincoln Kenitzer had a quarterback keep to make the score 21-3. With 3:37 left in the half, Lyon’s Dwane Robinson scored on a 72-yard touchdown run, their first and only touchdown of the half. Epericueta kicked a 21-yard field goal to make the score 28-13 at the half.
“I felt like we had a good game plan going into the game and our guys executed really well,” explains SAGU head coach Frank Tristan , “They made good adjustments in the second half and we didn’t make the right adjustments defensively. In the fourth quarter they got the momentum and we could never regain it.”
As Coach Tristan alluded to, in the third quarter, Lyon College came out of the gate ready to go. Michael Bowels quickly scored on a 48-yard touchdown run.
SAGU’s Ricky Bickham was able to answer quickly when he scored on a 12-yard touchdown run. SAGU was in the lead 35-20.
The Scots had a huge fourth quarter, scoring 22 points compared to SAGU’s seven. With 4:09 left on the clock, SAGU had an untimely fumble, giving the Scots back the ball on SAGU’s 37. The Scots were able to go seven plays to score, putting the score within two. Lyon’s two-point conversion was contested, but called good by the referees to tie the score at 42.
In overtime, SAGU got the ball first but were unable to move the chains. When they went for the field goal, the kick was blocked by Lyon’s Sage Wood.
On Lyon’s possession, they were able to score off a quarterback keep.&
For the offense, SAGU’s Lincoln Kenitzer was 19 for 30 and passed for 174 yards and one touchdown.
Ricky Bickham had 16 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns. JP Lowery had 19 carries for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Wide Receiver Toras Hill had four receptions for 49 yards and one touchdown. Justin Allen had three receptions for 56 yards.
For the defense, Matt Williams had 14 tackles; one sack and one tackle for loss. Ethan Eastwood added 11 tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss.
On Saturday, October 8, 2016, SAGU will host Arizona Christian University (2-2) for homecoming. Game time is at 11am and will be broadcast live on SAGU Sports Network.
