Bethany, OK- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Baseball team was on the road Friday afternoon as they took on Southwestern Christian University (Okla.) (SCU). The Lions (17-7, 2-2) took the first game of the series over the Eagles (14-8, 1-3) by the score of 7-3.

Ben Bills got the win and knocked in 2 RBI for the Lions

Top Performers

  • Ben Bills ( JR/York, PA ) got the win for the Lions as he pitched 7.2 innings giving up 8 hits, surrendering 2 earned runs. He walked one batter and struck out four others.
  • SAGU hit .378 for the game.
  • The Lions stayed pretty clean defensively committing just one errors on the day.
  • Ryan Cole ( JR/Longview, TX ) led the Lions with three hits.
  • Seven different Lions scored a run in the game.
  • Bills knocked in 2 RBI on the day as Vazquez, Crum, and Boyd all had 1 RBI each.

Lions Review

  • Joseph Vazquez ( SO/Katy, TX ) single in the first inning, but that was the extent of the damage for the Lions in the top of the 1 st inning.
  • The Eagles also managed a single in the bottom of the inning as the game remained scoreless.
  • Each team managed a hit in the second has both pitchers were keeping the batters contained.
  • Sonny Boyd ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) and Cole got on base with a pair of hits in the top of the 3 rd inning. Vazquez hit a ball that was bobbled which allowed Boyd to score and take the 1-0 lead.
  • Bills continued needed just eight pitches to get through the bottom of the inning as the Lions continued to lead.
  • Kyle Coolidge ( SR/Newberry Park, CA ) started the inning with a base hit and Tanner Lindle ( SR/Coppell, TX ) was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs. Boyd hit a sac fly to bring home Coolidge to put the Lions on top 2-0.
  • Bills gave a home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the 4 th inning but bounced back and retired the next three batters to ensure SAGU the 2-1 lead moving into the 5 th inning.
  • There was a total of two hits combined over the next two innings as the teams prepared for a tight finish moving into the later innings.
  • Augustin Martinez ( SR/Sugarland, TX ) doubled to let in the 7 th and was followed by a single by Cole. Martinez was tagged out to end the inning. SAGU missed an opportunity to add to their lead.
  • Bills gave up a double in the bottom of the inning but again retired the next three batters to escape the inning unscathed.
  • A monster 8 th inning by the Lions blew the game open. JV Verdin ( FR/Dallas, TX ) singled to kick the inning off then Bills doubled to left to bring the run home. Eric Crum ( FR/Kyle TX ) singled down the left-field line to score another run. SAGU would add two more runs to take a 6-1 lead moving into the bottom of the 8 th inning.
  • SCU singled three times and managed to tack on two more runs in the bottom of the 8 th inning. SAGU still lead 6-3 moving into the final inning.

What’s Next

SAGU will stay in Bethany, OK as they finish their series with SCU tomorrow March 7th. The two teams will play a doubleheader which will begin at 12:00 pm.
