Plainview, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) battled Wayland Baptist University (WBU) for the second time in Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) play on Saturday afternoon. The Lions (17-3, 9-3) are now on a four-game winning streak after beating the Pioneers (13-8, 6-6) by the score of 96-83.

Top Performers

  • Josh Kashila ( JR/Euless, TX ) led the way with 23 points, followed by 21 from Kentton Williams ( SR/Levelland, TX )
  • Nyk Mason ( Frisco, TX ) (19), Cortland Blake ( FR/Fort Worth, TX ), and Darian Davis ( SR/Garland, TX ) also hit double-digit scoring.
  • Mason pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds for the Lions.
  • SAGU won the rebounding battle 36-31.
  • The Lions shot 60% (33-55) from the field including 54% (12-22) from beyond the arc.

Lions Review

  • SAGU jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to gain the early momentum.
  • WBU came back immediately with six points of their own to tie the game.
  • WBU held their own as they kept the game within one possession at 16-13.
  • The Lions held a 20-13 lead with a little less than ten minutes remaining in the first half.
  • Cortland Blake hit three triples to ignite a 19-4 run over the next several minutes to give SAGU a commanding 39-17 lead with five minutes left before the half.
  • WBU stormed back with an 18-6 run of their own to cut the deficit to 43-35 at halftime.
  • SAGU established themselves early and often in the first five minutes of the second half. The Lions put together a huge 20-8 run to build the lead to 63-43.
  • The Pioneers chopped the lead down to 12 (71-59) with 8:13 left in the game.
  • WBU hit a triple with 3:57 left to trim the lead to single digits at 81-73.
  • Davis and Kashila were clutch down the stretch hitting their free throws to push the game out of reach for WBU.

SAGU (17-3, 9-3) will wrap up their three-game road trip Thursday February 5 th at 7:45 as they take on Oklahoma City University.
