Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football team East Texas Baptist University Howard Payne University Texas Lutheran

With ETBU’s 44-20 win over TLU, the Tigers are now #18 in the NCAA Division III poll.  “They have a really fast defense and they are a big-play offense, meaning they scored on high-yardage plays,” says head coach Frank Tristan , “Our offense has to be able to control the ball and our defense has to force them to drive the ball down the field while preventing the big plays.”

ETBU quarterback Dru Smith’ s favorite target is wide-receiver Chase Sojka .  Sojka had seven receptions for 160 yards and two touchdowns last week.  Running back Jourdan McNeil was also a big contributor for the Tigers.  McNeill had 28 carries for 138 yards and three touchdowns against TLU.  SAGU’s defense will have their hands full looking to shut down a strong ETBU offense.

The Lions had an error-filled game against HPU and they have been working this week to improve on those mistakes.  SAGU’s JP Lowery had 16 carries for 101 yards and three touchdowns against HPU.  Wide Receiver Jeremy Carr had four receptions for 122 yards and one touchdown.  Quarterback CJ Collins was 22 for 33 with 300 yards and one touchdown pass.

SAGU will look to senior linebacker Ethan Eastwood and defensive lineman D’Vonn Brown for leadership on the defense.  Last week Eastwood had 13 tackles and one sack.  Senior All-American D’Vonn Brown had six tackles, three and a half of those for a loss.  Brown also had 1.5 sacks.  Against HPU, Matt Williams had two interceptions for the Lions.

The Lions will travel to Marshall, Texas on Saturday, September 10, 2016.  Game time is at 7pm.
