Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) finished their four-game series with Ottawa University (Kan.) (OTT) Saturday afternoon. The Lions (5-3, 0-0) and the Braves (2-2, 0-0) split their doubleheader for the second day in a row. Ottawa took the first game 16-1 while SAGU won the second game 7-3.

Game 1

Top Performers

  • SAGU hit just .182 for the game
  • Sony Boyd ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) had the lone RBI for the Lions as Brock Jones crossed the plate scoring the only run for the Lions.
  • Dennis Smith ( JR/Jewett, TX ) led the pitching staff with three strikeouts but gave up ten hits, and six earned runs over four innings.
  • SAGU shot themselves in the foot with seven errors and five runners left on base.

Lions Review

  • SAGU gave up two runs in the first inning and five in the second inning to find themselves behind early.
  • The Lions went scoreless for the first five innings. Ottawa led 14-0 nothing at that point.
  • SAGU got on the board in the sixth, but couldn’t really cut into the lead.
  • Ottawa posted two more runs in the seventh inning for good measure to take the game 16-1.

Game 2

Top Performers

  • Logan Mann ( JR/New Bloomfield, PA ) and A.J. Munoz ( SR/Waxahachie, TX ) combined to pitch seven innings, three earned runs, three walks, and three hits.
  • JV Verdin ( FR/ Dallas, TX ) and Eric Crum ( FR/ Kyle TX ) each had two RBI for the Lions.
  • Ryan Cole ( JR/ Longview, TX ) crossed the plate three times for the Lions on the day.
  • SAGU left 10 runners on base but played more efficiently on defense as they committed no errors.
  • SAGU hit much better as a team logging .280 at the plate.

Lions Review

  • SAGU got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Ottawa got on the board in the second inning, but SAGU answered to maintain their two-run lead.
  • The Lions would hold Ottawa scoreless for the next four innings as they added four runs to their lead. SAGU would hold a 7-1 advantage going into the seventh inning.
  • Ottawa would post two more runs in the top of the seventh, but it was too late as the Lions took the game 7-3.

What’s Next

SAGU (5-3, 0-0) will continue their homestand with another four-game series. The Lions will begin the series with a doubleheader on Friday, February 7, 2020. The first game will begin at 12 pm with the second game to follow approximately twenty minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
