Waxahachie, Texas- March 23, 2016- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) baseball team split a non-conference match-up against University of the Southwest (15-5, 10-9).  Despite the windy conditions at the SAGU field, both teams were able to get plenty of runs offensively.  The Lions are currently 12-21 and USW is 6-19.

Game One (W 15-5)

Jake Clary started on the mound for the Lions in game one.  Clary pitched four innings with one strike-out and six hits. Auston Moore, Anthony Montalvo and Carson Conarty each pitched one inning for SAGU.
Raul Castro had a dominant day offensively and it all started in the first inning when he grounded into a double play but scored Eric Hagstrom in the process.

In the bottom of the second, Castro struck again.  With two outs, SAGU’s Elijah Young singled to center field to get on base. Chris Wallace then doubled shallow down the left field line scoring Young. Eric Hagstrom singled up the middle, hitting in Wallace. Jake Killion hit a double and bringing home Hagstrom in the process. Griffin Glenn reached base on a walk.  And then, on a 0-0 count, Raul Castro hit a three run home run over the left field fence.  At the end of the second, SAGU was in the lead 7-3.

In the bottom of the seventh SAGU added seven more runs off of eight hits. Maverick Keffer hit a double, with two RBI’s. Eric Hagstrom also hit a double, scoring one run.

Castro went two for five, three RBI’s, and scoring one run. Jake Killion went three for four with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Game Two (L 10-9)

The bottom of the second was an inning of home runs for the Lions.   SAGU picked up five runs, partly thanks to two home runs in the inning. Josh Terry hit a three run
home run over the left field fence on a 3-1 count.  Next, Jake Killion hit a home run over the center field fence on a 0-1 count.

Going into the fifth inning, SAGU was in the lead 6-0.  In the bottom of the fifth, the Mustangs were able to rally and scored eight runs off of six hits. USW picked up two more runs in the sixth.

The Lions were able to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Two of the runs came after USW errors.

In the bottom of the seventh, SAGU got one runner on base, but it wasn’t enough.  The Lions lost 10-9.

SAGU’s Ty Chiglo started for the Lions and pitched four innings. Caleb Carnell pitched 2/3 inning, Auston Moore pitched 1/3 inning, Brett Carroll and AJ Munos both pitched one inning.

Raul Castro and Jake Payonk each hit doubles while Jake Killion and Josh Terry each hit home runs.

SAGU will next play Morningside College (Iowa) at a neutral location in Joplin, Missouri on March 25-26, 2016.  Morningside is currently 18-5.
