Waxahachie, Texas – January 14, 2017- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball team got back in the win column on Saturday after topping Bacone College 87-71. The Lions are now 14-4 overall, Bacone is now 3-10. The Lions are third place in the SAC with a 4-2 record.
The first five minutes of play went into Bacone’s favor. With 14:51, the Warriors were up 12-8. SAGU’s Isaak Rowe and Keyunta Watkins made back-to-back three pointers to swing the lead once and for all in the Lions favor.
With 1:25 left in the half, BC’s Brandon Chatman made a three pointer to bring the game within nine points. Lance Tipton answered with a basket on the Lions next possession. The halftime score was 45-33.
SAGU’s greatest lead of the night came with 11:24 left in the game, when Darian Davis made both free throws to extend SAGU’s lead to 22 points (70-48).
Ironically, Bacone outshot SAGU in most areas. They were for 46% from the field compared to SAGU’s 41%. Bacone also led from behind the arc, shooting 36% compared to the Lions 27%. The biggest difference came from free throws. SAGU went 20 for 26 for 77%. Bacone shot 12 for 28 for 43%.
Josh Williams had a season high 21 points with three assists and seven rebounds. Isaak Rowe scored 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Keyunta Watkins and Dominique Josephs each scored 10 points.
On Thursday, January 19, 2017, SAGU will host Mid-America Christian University at 8pm.
