Hawkins, Texas- November 18, 2015- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball team improved to 5-1 on the season after topping Jarvis Christian College (JCC), 79-78.  The Lions are currently ranked no. 24 in the NAIA.

SAGU got off to a bit of a slow start and went down by seven with 11:40 left in the first half.  The Lions battled back thanks to a three point shot by Micah Gentry , and two baskets by Isaak Rowe and Keyunta Watkins , SAGU was able to tie the game at 22-22 with 5:53 left in the half.  From that point on, the Lions took the lead and held it until 12 seconds left in the game.

“In the second half we came out and dominated going up 21 points with 8:25 left,” says head coach Donnie Bostwick , “We ran out of gas and they got hot as we watched our lead melt quickly. We missed free throws and had some turnovers. They took the lead by one with 12 seconds left.”

The Lions called a timeout and had the ball at half court.  SAGU set up a play and cut Watkins down the sideline and Rowe up the other side.  Watkins hit Rowe for a layup to go up by one with five seconds left. Remington Mitchell blocked JCC’s final shot to secure the win.

Watkins led all-scorers with 26 points.  He also had three assists.  Rowe had 14 points and eight rebounds. Elbert Lawrence and Tyler Pate each scored 13 points. Emmanuel Adoyi had 12 rebounds and Josh Swearingin had five steals for the Lions.

For Jarvis, James Parker and Terrel De Rouen each had 15 points.  JCC is now 1-1 for the season.&

On Thursday, November 19, 2015 the Lions will play an undefeated Wiley College (3-0).  Two weeks ago SAGU hosted Wiley and lost 62-58.  The Lions will play at WC at 7:30pm.
