Plainview, Texas- April 15, 2016- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) baseball team went 1-2 in an away series against Wayland Baptist University.  WBU is currently 35-13 and 11-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC).  The Lions are now 14-34 overall and 4-14 in the SAC.

Game one (L 9-0)

In game one, SAGU wasn’t able to get the bats going enough to get a run on the board and unfortunately, WBU was quick to strike.  The Pioneers scored two runs in the first inning, four runs in the third and three runs in the sixth.

Jake Payonk got SAGU’s lone hit of the game, going one for three.  In the top of the fifth he singled to right field.

Brandon Ventura started on the mound and pitched four innings for SAGU.  He had one strike out while allowing nine hits.  Ty Chiglo came in relief and pitched two innings.
For WBU, Tyler Adams pitched all seven innings, striking out seven and giving up only one hit.

Game Two (L 9-1)

The Pioneers were able to score in every inning but the fifth.  SAGU’s lone run came in the top of the sixth.

Griffin Glenn reached base on a walk.  Maverick Keffer doubled to right field, driving in Glenn.  The Lions left two on base.

Keffer went one for three with one double and one RBI.  Elijah Young also went one for three with one double.

WBU’s Will Bass hit a home run.  The Pioneers Jordie Henry picked up the win pitching.

SAGU’s Collin Gifford pitched all six innings.  He gave up 12 hits.

Game Three ( W 9-7)

The Lions were able to top WBU on their Senior Day with the 9-7 victory over the Pioneers.

WBU led 4-2 going into the fourth inning, when the Lions scored four runs and took the lead for the remainder of the game.  The Lions scored their four runs off of four singles and a walk.

Wayland ended with four more hits than SAGU, 14-10.  SAGU also had one more error than the Pioneers, 2-1.  The difference in the game was that the Lions only stranded three on base compared to WBU’s 11.

Jacob Keltner earned the win for SAGU.  He had three strike-outs, giving up six earned runs on nine hits.  Keltner pitched four innings.  Colton Glover, Spenser Hart, Mark Martinez, AJ Munoz and Carson Conarty each pitched one inning for SAGU.

Tallon Ralstin had a big day at the plate.  He went three for four with two home runs.  He had four RBI’s and three runs scored.  Ralstin’s homers came in the top of the second and top of the eighth.  Jake Payonk went three for four with two runs scored.

Friday’s win over WBU was big for the Lions.  They are no longer last place in the Sooner Athletic Conference.  The last place team will not be invited to the SAC tournament at the first of May.

On Friday, April 22, 2016, SAGU will host University of Science & Arts-Oklahoma.  Game time is at 1pm.  USAO is currently 33-10.  They are in fourth place in the SAC and ranked no. 23 in the NAIA.
