The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) walked into the gym early this morning to finish the second day of the tournament and head back to Waxahachie on the right note. Their first test of the day was the Culver Stockton Wildcats. The Wildcat’s are led by first year head coach Daniel Cabrera and upper classmen leadership with 5 of their starters being juniors or seniors. That leadership led the Wildcats to a first set win, 21-25. This was a very close and well fought game that went all the way to the fifth set. The Lions kept their composure and took the victory 15-10 in the fifth, capturing their 2nd win of the 2018 season. Kali Shaw led the way with another double double with 20 kills and 13 digs. Sophia Ivy had a career morning with 49 assist. Some newer faces to the program including freshman Kennedy Wiley and Jancee Akers added 10 kills. Coach Moore said, “ Celi Bruce really carried us emotionally on the floor,” ending the game with 28 digs.
Immediately after their final match, against the host team, of the tournament started. The Lions picked up right where they left off the match before and won three sets in a row, 25-23, 25-23, and 25-17. Defeating College of the Ozarks and going undefeated on day 2 would help them obtain a 3-1 start to the season. Kali Shaw had her 3rd double double of the tournament with 13 kills and 14 digs. Suzanny Figueiredo had an outstanding game with her first double double of the season, 12 kills and 24 digs. Once again, Celi Bruce and Sophia Ivy did their parts with Ivy having 37 assist and Bruce’s 23 digs.
Coach Moore stated, “We are off to a 30-1 start and have played well. This week we were able to play 3 freshman in our rotation and all three are off to an excellent start off their college playing career.” The Lions are back in action for their first home games of the season when Langston University and Our Lady of the Lake University travel to Waxahachie. The game will tip-off at 6pm, starting with Langston then Our Lady of the Lake shortly after.
