Waxahachie, Texas – September 14 th , 2017 – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s soccer team tied 1-1 with the Huston-Tillotson Rams on Thursday afternoon.
The men’s team fell short in the beginning with Huston-Tillotson scoring a goal midway through the first half. Possession was a constant battle between both the Rams and Lions.
The second half was a challenge for the men as they were playing with one less man on the field. The Lions overcame this adversity and it paid off in their favor.
With just under 9 minutes left in the second half, Jose Zapata won a hard-fought battle with the ball. From the top right side, Zapata crossed the ball down to center of the playing field allowing Juan Herrera-Perla to capitalize on a shot at the goal. SAGU tied the game at 1-1. The final 8 minutes of regulation were nothing less than a constant battle of attacking the goal.
Both teams went to double overtime with neither team capitalizing on another goal. Goalie Edgar Chavez made a total of three saves in these final crucial minutes.
The SAGU men will play an Alumni game on September 23 rd , 2017 at a time that will later be determined.
