Commerce, TX – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Cross Country teams competed Saturday at the East Texas Shootout

SAGU Runners Zackery Hammond and Robert Herrera Compete at the East Texas Shootout

hosted by Texas A&M Commerce.

Both teams were competing in their first meet of the season. The women opened their season in a 5K while the men ran an 8K. Other teams competing in the event were, NCAA Division II Texas A&M Commerce, Texas A&M Kingsville, and Dallas Baptist University as well as Jacksonville College, Texas College, and the University of Arkansas-Rich Mountain.

Lion Racers

  • The Lady Lions finished fourth in the meet with an average time of 24:49.63.
  • Skyla Mackey (FR/Anna, TX) finished as the top female runner for the Lady Lions in 21:23.1. This was good enough for 16 th at the meet.
  • Yanelly O’Campo-Turcios (SO/La Porte, TX) competing for the first time in over a year finished 24 th in a time of 22:11.98.
  • The SAGU men’s team finished fourth as well averaging 29:34.21.
  • Top finisher for the Lions was sophomore Zackery Hammond (Corsicana, TX) who completed the course in 26:47.16 to finish 7 th among all runners.
  • Junior Cody Walker (Princeton, TX) finished 11 th overall in a time of 27:12.29.
  • The third SAGU runner in the top 15 finishers was Robert Herrera (JR/Lyford, TX) with a time of 27:40.67

Covarrubias Corner

  • “I am very proud of both our men’s and women’s teams. It is early in the season to run fast and our training has consisted of base training only. Today’s results show that the base training is working. We sat out two of our top five men and women today.”

The Next Step

SAGU Cross Country runs again on September 14 th at the UT Dallas Invite hosted by the University of Texas at Dallas. The men will run at 8:30 am and the women at 9:15 am.
