Waxahachie, Texas- February 6, 2016- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) women’s basketball team may have picked up the biggest win of their season so far, after topping Oklahoma City University , 65-52. OCU is currently ranked no. 14 in the NAIA and they are the reigning NAIA National Champions . OCU is in second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) with a record of 10-2. SAGU is now tied for third place in the SAC with a record of 7-5.
“I was very proud of the fight our team showed tonight,” says head coach Tiffany Phillips , “We battled with the #14 team in the nation and some things went our way in the fourth quarter. We executed the game plan and stuck with it for 40 minutes.”
Throughout the first half of play the game remained neck and neck. The greatest lead of the half was in OCU’s favor when with 5:22 remaining in the half, the Lady Stars’ Allison Frey hit a three pointer to go up by seven points. SAGU’s YaYa Enabuluele and Meghan Becker hit back-to-back three pointers to bring the score within one at halftime. At the half, OCU was in the lead 26-25.
To start the second half, SAGU’s Laken Ward made a basket to put the Lions up 27-26. Seconds later, OCU’s Allison Frey hit a three pointer to push the Lady Stars into the lead once again. For the remainder of the third quarter OCU led the game.
In the fourth quarter the tide started to turn. With 6:07 left in the game, Yaya Enabuluele hit another timely three pointer to put SAGU on top, 45-43. In the next two and a half minutes SAGU went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead by nine points. The Lady Lions continued with the lead and in the end, they brought down the no. 14 ranked team in the nation.
SAGU had four players score in double digits, two of which came off the bench. Phillips her bench was instrumental in the win, “We had some players step up for us and that was huge. Meghan came off the bench and scored 15. YaYa did a great job running our offense tonight. Once again I thought our defense did an excellent job.”
The difference in the game very well could have come down to free throws. SAGU was 19 for 23, shooting for 83%. OCU was four for 12 at 33%. SAGU also out rebounded OCU, 44 to 31.
SAGU’s Meghan Becker had a career-high 15 points. Laken Ward scored 14 with nine rebounds. Dy’Teesha Diggles had 12 points and five rebounds and Charity Page had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
OCU was led by Catherine Krushke , who had 12 points.
On Thursday, February 11, 2016 SAGU will travel to Bacone College to revenge a loss earlier in the season. Game time is at 6pm. Bacone currently is 4-8 in the SAC and 8-13 overall.
