Hobbs, NM- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Softball team hit the road to play a four-game series against the University of Southwest (SWU). The Lady Lions (6-9, 0-0) were able to sweep both games of the doubleheader against the Mustangs (1-19, 0-3) by the score of 5-1 in the first game and 12-0 in the second game.

Game 1

Top Performers

  • Rosie Guadarrama ( JR/Cushing, TX ) led the Lady Lions with 3 hits, but the SAGU bats were hot as four batters had 2 hits each.
  • Maddie Watson ( SO/Frisco, TX )  and Haidyn Ransdell ( FR/Alvarado, TX ) each scored a run and knocked in a run.
  • SAGU hit .428 for the game.
  • Autumn Graham ( JR/ Flower Mound, TX ) held SWU in check as she pitched 7.0 innings allowing just 1 run on 5 hits. She walked three batters and struck out two others on her way to a win.

Lions Review

  • The Lions hit two singles in the first but had nothing to show for it as they moved to the bottom of the inning.
  • Morgan Valentino ( JR/Red Oak, TX ) tripled to start off the top of the 2 nd inning. Ransdell singled to put the first run on the board for SAGU. An SWU error made it 2-0 moving into the bottom of the 2 nd inning.
  • Graham got two quick outs, but SWU got a hit and an error to score a run to get themselves on the board.
  • The 3 rd inning would see a hit by each team with no real damage done.
  • Sarah Sanders ( FR/Hillsboro, TX ) and Ransdell hit back to back singles and Sanders later scored on a double by Ashlyn Teran ( SO/Normangee, TX ) to make it 3-1.
  • SWU managed just one hit over the next three innings as SAGU maintained their lead.
  • The Lady Lions would add two more runs in the top of the 7 th and the Mustangs could not answer as SAGU won 5-1.

Game 2

Top Performers

  • Brycelyn Richards ( SO/Italy, TX ) and Sanders each knocked in 3 RBI and scored a run for the Lady Lions.
  • Alana Ortega ( FR/Houston, TX ) led SAGU with 3 runs and tied for the lead in hits with 2. Valentino also had 2 hits of her own.
  • SAGU hit .461 for the game.
  • Kassandra Vargas ( SO/Galena Park, TX ) pitched 5.0 innings allowing just 2 hits and 0 runs while striking out one batter and walking another.
  • The Lady Lions were clean defensively as the didn’t commit an error.

Lions Review

  • The Lady Lions put together a massive 1 st inning which set the tone for the game. Richards ripped a double which scored Ortega and Teran. Valentino added her own double that scored two more runs. Guadarrama added yet another double scoring two more Lady Lions. The inning ended, but not after SAGU posted 6 hits and 9 runs.
  • SAGU would add 2 more runs one a bobble and a sac fly by Watson.
  • Vargas didn’t allow a hit through the first two innings of the game.
  • Ortega came around to score again on an SWU error to give the Lions a 12-0 lead.
  • The Mustangs got two hits in the bottom of the 3 rd , but couldn’t get anyone across the plate.
  • SAGU didn’t score the rest of the game, but it wasn’t an issue as Vargas retired the last six Mustang batters to seal the win for the Lady Lions.

What’s Next

SAGU will stay put in Hobbs, NM as they will play a doubleheader with USW tomorrow March 7 th . The first game will begin at 12:00 pm with the second game following at approximately 2:00 pm.
