SAGU women’s soccer prays with the Paul Quinn Lady Tigers after the match

The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Women’s Soccer team entertained the Paul Quinn Lady Tigers Thursday at 1:00 pm in their season-opening match. The Lady Lions (1-0-0, 0-0-0) came away with a 2-0 win against the Tigers. The win marked the 4 th year in a row that the Lady Lions have not lost an opening match. Goalkeeper tandem Sarah Palmer and Taylor Jackson combined for the shutout of the Lady Tigers.

Lady Lion Review

  • The 1:00 pm start was accompanied by temperatures soaring into the upper 90’s and a heat index well over 100 degrees. Both teams felt the effect of the weather late in both halves.
  • The goal by Sandra Burton was the first of her collegiate career.
  • Natalia Torres began her junior season with a goal and an assist on the day.
  • Senior Natalie Solorio’s assist was the 8 th of her SAGU career and set up Natalia Torres for the match clinching goal.
  • Paul Quinn had multiple chances to score but could not convert. The Lady Tigers hit the crossbar in the 57 th minute and the right post in the 60 th minute and failed to convert in front of the Lady Lions net in the 80 th minute when sophomore transfer goalkeeper Taylor Jackson made a save.
  • On the day SAGU outshot Paul Quinn 16-11 and 12-3 in shots on goal. Paul Quinn goalkeeper Vasquez made 10 saves while her counterparts for the Lady Lions made 3 saves on the match.

Words from the Coaches

Head Coach Paul Hason was jubilant after the game stating that the girls fought throughout the match and overcame some tough moments in the 2 nd half to preserve the victory.

The Next Step

The Lady Lions (1-0-0, 0-0-0) will not play again until Saturday, September 7th at 2:00 PM in a home contest against Texas College from Tyler, TX. This will be a double tilt for SAGU with a men’s game to follow scheduled at 4:00 pm.
