Goodwell, OK- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Women’s Basketball team traveled to Goodwell, Oklahoma on Thursday night to battle Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU). The Lions (10-8, 5-6) pushed their win streak to three games as they defeated the Aggies (5-15, 0-11) by the score of 81-77.

Sydney Meador scored 29 points in the win over OPSU

Top Performers

  • Sydney Meador ( JR/Denton, TX ) led all scorers with 29 points.
  • Lexi Rich ( SR/ San Antonio, TX ) (19) and Kiara Glenn ( JR/Ennis, TX ) (17) also managed to score in double figures.
  • SAGU won the rebounding battle 40-32.
  • Phillipa Green ( JR/Freeport, Bahamas ) led all players with 12 boards.
  • Glenn also led the Lady Lions with 6 assists.

Lions Review

  • OPSU got off to a quick start by draining two long-range shots taking a 6-2 advantage on SAGU with just over a minute gone in the game.
  • The Lady Lions put together a massive 14-3 run to take a 16-9 lead halfway through the 1 st quarter.
  • Lauren Baker ( FR/Lexington, KY ) added a couple of baskets at the end of the first quarter to extended the lead to 24-14 as the teams moved toward the 2 nd quarter.
  • OPSU came alive with a 13-6 run to open the 2 nd quarter and cut it to a single possession game with 3:33 left before halftime.
  • SAGU would carry a 37-35 lead at half thanks to six straight points by Meador.
  • Each team would trade baskets to open the 3 rd quarter until Glenn gave the Lady Lions some breathing room at 48-42.
  • An OPSU 7-0 run gave them their first lead of the 2 nd half with 4:33 left to go in the third.
  • Tamera Derrough ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) would score at the end of the quarter to cut the OPSU lead to 57-56.
  • Rich and Glenn combined for a crucial 8 points over the next several minutes to give SAGU a 67-60 lead with 6:21 left in the game.
  • Greene gave the Lady Lions a nine-point lead with just under 3:00 minutes left.
  • OPSU would not go away without a fight as they found themselves down 77-75 with 1:25 in the game.
  • Clutch free-throws by Rich and Meador sealed the deal for SAGU as they won 81-77.

What’s Next

SAGU (10-8, 5-6) will look to avenge their earlier loss to Wayland Baptist University as they battle the Flying Queens in Planview, TX on Saturday, February 1 st at 2:00 pm.
