Fort Worth, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Women’s Basketball team played their last regular-season road game of the season on Tuesday night as they traveled to play Texas Wesleyan University (TXWU). The Lions (12-14, 7-12) struggled late against the Rams (16-10, 10-8) and ended up falling by the score of 85-76.

Lions Review

  • Sydney Meador ( JR/Denton, TX ) led the Lady Lions in scoring with 20 points while Kiara Glenn ( JR/Ennis, TX ) pitched in 19 points of her own.
  • Alexis Casher ( Irvington, AL ) recorded another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Lexi Rich ( SR/San Antonio, TX ) only had 4 points but still impacted the game by pulling down 12 rebounds and adding 5 assists.
  • SAGU was outrebounded 37-33.
  • The Lady Lions shot 45% (30-66) from the field including 23% (5-21) from behind the arc.

Top Performers

  • Meador scored 9 of the first 11 SAGU points including a three-pointer that gave the Lady Lions an early 13-7 lead.
  • TXWU kept themselves within striking distance as they cashed in from deep to make it 20-14 Lady Lions with 2:45 to go in the first quarter.
  • Glenn finished the quarter just like she did at the beginning with a bucket. This time it gave SAGU a 26-17 lead after one-quarter of play.
  • The tandem of Tamera Derrough ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) and Meador combined 11 points as the Lions and 11-4 run to build a 37-21 advantage with 5:56 before the half.
  • An 11-2 run by the Rams put them right back in the game at 39-32, but SAGU held TXWU scoreless the last couple minutes of the half to take a 44-32 lead into the halftime break.
  • The Rams went on a massive 19-2 run to take a 51-46 midway through the third quarter.
  • Lauren Baker ( FR/Lexington, KY ) scored 4 points late in the quarter to give SAGU a chance, but TXWU held a 65-55 lead moving into the final quarter.
  • Glenn cut the lead to single-digits at 69-61.
  • A Casher score followed by a triple by Meador trimmed the lead to 72-66. Rich added another basket to cut the lead to four with 5:00 remaining.
  • A 7-2 run from the Rams came at a crucial time as they built a 79-70 lead with 3:18 left in the game.
  • Glenn nailed two triples late, but the Lady Lions couldn’t get the stops they needed down the stretch and eventually fell to the Rams 85-76.

Lions Review

SAGU has to shift their focus quickly to as another Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) opponent Bacone (Okla.) visits the Sheaffer Center on Thursday, February 27 th at 6:00 pm.
