Waxahachie, Texas – January 26, 2017- It came down to the final second of the game, but the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) women’s basketball team couldn’t hit the last second shot to top Texas Wesleyan University .  SAGU lost to the Lady Rams 51-50.  SAGU falls to 9-9 overall and 2-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC).  TWU is now 13-7 overall and 5-4 in the SAC.

The Lady Rams held their biggest lead of the night in the middle of the second quarter when Katelynn Threats extended their lead 28-20.

SAGU’s Alexus McAfee and Laken Ward each made a basket to bring the score within three with 1:32 left in the first half.  In what would be a preview of what was to come at the end of the game, TWU’s Lorian Benjamin hit a shot with seven seconds left to give the Lady Rams the 31-26 edge.

Although the halftime score was close, TWU outrebounded SAGU 30-16.

The second half brought a much different look for the Lady Lions.  The first score of the half came after Charity Page grabbed an offensive rebound and had the put back.  The next two minutes remained scoreless, and then SAGU’s Kayle Bise hit a three to tie the score at 36.

SAGU was able to take their largest lead of the night with 4:08 left in the game when Bise hit another big three to put the Lady Lions up 48-43.

For exactly the next four minutes, SAGU stayed in the lead.  With 0:08 left in the game, TWU’s Threats hustled for the offensive rebound and passed it out to Nicole Gleason beyond the arc.  Gleason nailed the three pointer, her only points for the night, to give the Lady Rams the one point lead.

With two seconds left in the game, SAGU’s Alexis McAfee was able to get a shot off, but it didn’t fall.  The Lady Lions lost by one point.

SAGU was led by senior Charity Page with a double/double.  She had 18 points and 14 rebounds, she also added three blocks and two steals. Kayla Bise scored nine points, going three of five from three-point range. Laken Ward added eight points and 12 rebounds.

TWU’s Katelyn Threats scored 18 points with 12 rebounds.
