Warren Mize

Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) alumnus, Warren Mize, recently received the Give a Note Foundation ’s Music Education Innovator Award grant which is sponsored by the CMA (Country Music Association) Foundation .

The grant is given to creative educators who have new or existing music programs that execute inventive and replicable ideas. Mize received the award due to his diligence in developing a two-year music business program.

Mize is the Director of Choral Studies at East Central High School in San Antonio, Texas . A few years ago, he attended an event for music business at a university. During this event, Mize was struck with an idea-what if a similar program were incorporated into a high school curriculum? After a period of research, he couldn’t find any other program for high school students similar to this in the state of Texas.

He began envisioning how a music business program would function in a high school setting. Courses in music business would open a new avenue for students to explore a whole new side of music.

After three years of development, Mize completed constructing the two-year business program for his students which would later become nationally recognized.

Mize learned that this program was exactly what the foundation wanted to see duplicated because of its uniqueness and effectiveness.

The Give a Note Foundation’s mission is to provide financial assistance to music programs around the country who have gone above and beyond to implement innovative strategies within the classroom. Each year, five programs are selected to receive a grant of $4,000.

“This isn’t just because I came up with some great idea, this is because God deposits in us that creativity that enables us to make a difference in the world and make our mark on people’s lives,” says Mize. “That’s why we’re doing this.”

Before Warren Mize began his career as an educator, he served as a pastor for 30 years. Up to this point, Mize felt God was preparing him for the season he is now. “I tell people all the time, I’m living the dream. I just love these kids and I love working with them.”
