Charlotte, North Carolina- November 23, 2015- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) junior Destiny Garza finished in 31 st place at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Cross Country National Championship .  This is the first time any SAGU athlete has competed in the meet.

Garza raced against 321 other NAIA Division I athletes, finishing in 18:13.2.

Head coach Jason Covarrubias says that the championship experience met every expectation he had for Garza, “Destiny knew she was up against a tough field with elite caliber runners, but from any another’s perspective she would be included as one of those elites! She is special and the best part is that she is self-made.”

In finishing 31 st , Garza placed one spot away from being named to the NAIA Cross Country All-American Team.  Covarrubias believes missing the honor by one place will only make the junior better next season, “It will just add fuel to the fire, the fire to the best in the nation!  I am so proud of her hard work and the results that she had this year. Effort plus will equals boundless results!”

Only one weekend ago Garza placed seventh at the National Christian College Athletic Association’s (NCCAA) National Championships in Houghton, New York.  Garza finished in 18:12 and was named to the NCCAA All-American Team.  This year was Garza’s third year to represent SAGU at the NCCAA National Championship.

Senior Kellian Hunt , from Biola , finished first at the NAIA National Championship with a time of 17:16. Sarah Moore , a junior from Oklahoma City University , was the fastest Sooner Athletic Conference representative.  She finished 22 nd , coming across the finish line at 18:05.
