National Christian Colleges Athletics Association (NCCAA) Track and Field Championships Destiny Garza Jerry Nava

On Saturday, Nava finished the 5k in 16:34.23.  That put him in eighth place out of 11 athletes.  Garza finished in sixth place out of 18 athletes.  She crossed the finish line at 18:25.24.  Coming into the race Garza had the 11 th fastest time.

On Friday, both Nava and Garza competed in the 10k.  Garza finished first, earning a NCCAA National Champion title.  Both athletes set personal records, as well as school records in the 10k and they scored a combined 15 points as a program over the meet.  All of those honors are above and beyond what Coach Jason Covarrubias expected for his team, “I am so impressed with Destiny and Jerry.  My goal was to go to Shorter and let these kids see for themselves that we belong and can compete at the highest level.  That is exactly what they did!”

Garza and Nava are not done.  They have one more national tournament and that is the NAIA National Championship .  They will be making the first appearance in SAGU history says Covarrubias, “Next stop is Gulf Shores, Alabama where these two not only compete at another National Championship, but they embark on a new event- the marathon.  It is time to get back to work, but for tonight we will sit back and refuel on some pizza.”

The NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships will be held May 26-28, 2016 at Gulf Shores, Alabama.  The men’s and women’s marathon will be held on Saturday, May 28 th at 6am.
