Waxahachie, Texas – June 4, 2017- Four Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football players have been nominated for the 2017 D2vsNAIA senior Awards/Game Watch lists . Seniors Devon Petty, J.P. Lowery, Matt Lighter and Carl Morgan were all chosen as players to watch.
The four seniors have all racked up post-season honors as Lions. This past season, Petty, Morgan and Lighter were named Central State Football League’s 1 st Team All-Conference. Lowery was named to the 2nd Team CSFL.
Devon Petty is an Offensive Lineman from Waco, Texas. In 2016, Petty had 55 knock down blocks and graded at 85% for the season. Petty is a two year starter for the Lions.
J.P. Lowery is from Clear Falls, Texas. This past season he led the Lions in rushing, averaging over 82 yards per game. He had 161 carries for 823 yards total. He also scored nine touchdowns for the Lions. In the NAIA, Lowery ranked no. 35 in rushing yards per game and no. 43 in total rushing.
Matt Lighter is from Katy, Texas. For the past two years, Lighter has been on the 1 st Team All-CSFL. In 2016 he had 13.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. He also had 47 tackles with a season high of 11 tackles against Arizona Christian. Lighter has three national rankings in the NAIA. He ranks no. 34 in tackles for
loss per game, no. 35 in fumbles forced per game and no. 46 in total tackles for loss.
Carl Morgan is from Shreveport, Louisiana. In seven games played last season, Morgan had four interceptions. He also had 40 tackles for the year, averaging over five tackles per game. As a sophomore, Morgan was named 2 nd Team All-NAIA.
The 2017 D2 verses NAIA Challenge will be held in Myrtle Beach in December. This is a yearly even that was established in 2012.
