Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football Central States Football League Arizona Christian University
What can SAGU Lions fans expect from Arizona Christian? According to head coach Frank Tristan , they will have multiple threats, “They have a high-powered offense with three legitimate all-conference players at skill positions. Quarterback Gerrit Groenewold is the returning offensive CSFL player of the year from 2015, and he has two awesome weapons as receivers.”
Groenewold is averaging nearly 280 yards passing per game. He has a completion rate of 61%. Senior wide receiver Donovan Smith is averaging six catches for 75 yards per game and junior wide receiver Johnathan Parks is averaging over three catches per game as well as 46-yards.
“Defensively, they fly around the field and they’re excellent playing man or coverage defenses. They have a great combination of being extremely athletic and really well coached,” explains Tristan.
ACU linebacker Josh Carter is averaging seven tackles per game and defensive back Timothy Clayton currently ranks in the NAIA for fumbles forced.
The Lions are coming off a tough road loss to Lyon College in overtime. As they prepare for ACU, they will work to continue and establish the run offensively. Defensively their goal is to prevent the Firestorm from making the big play.
The Lions are still battling injuries. SAGU’s starting quarterback, CJ Collins , will be out for the remainder of the season. Lincoln Kenitzer has stepped in and is currently averaging 150 yards per game with a passing percentage of 65%.
SAGU running back JP Lowery is averaging nearly 100 yards a game. Wide Receiver Justin Allen is leading the Lions in receptions. He is averaging over three catches per game for nearly 40 yards a game.
Defensively for the Lions, senior Ethan Eastwood is averaging 10 tackles per game.
This will be SAGU and ACU’s second meeting after Arizona Christian joined the CSFL last year. In 2015, ACU went undefeated in conference play.
Game time is at 11am central standard time. SAGU Sports Network will be broadcasting the game live.
