Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions Howard Payne University East Texas Baptist University

During week one, the Lion’s offense was dominant, garnering 509 total yards with 254 coming on the ground and 255 through the air. CJ Collins completed 12 of 22 passes for 255 yards. JP Lowery rushed for 167 yards and Ricky Bickham carried the ball five times for 85 yards. Defensively, SAGU forced one fumble and one interception that resulted in the Lion’s first touchdown of the year.

East Texas Baptist University (ETBU) will play its season opener on Saturday at Lumpkins Stadium. ETBU is an NCAA Division III member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC). In the ASC Pre-Season Poll ETBU was picked to finish 3 rd . Last season the Tigers finished 7-3 and were ranked as high as 15 th nationally in Division III.

SAGU Head Football Coach Frank Tristan knows that ETBU will be a tough opponent, “ETBU’s team speed across the board is incredible. We have worked this week on trying to deal with their offensive tempo and defensive athleticism. Coach Highsmith will have them very well prepared and it will be a great challenge for our program.”

The contest is set to start at 7:00 PM at Lumpkins Stadium on Saturday, September 9 th .
