Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball Southwestern Christian University Sooner Athletic Conference
SAGU, who is currently ranked no. 20 in the NAIA, is now 16-6 overall and 6-4 in the SAC. SCU is now 14-8 overall and 6-4 in the SAC.
The game got off to a slow start. Five minutes in, the score was tied at five all. From that point on, the Eagles pulled away and held the lead for the rest of the game.
At halftime, SAGU was able to cut SCU’s lead to nine, making the score 40-31.
With nine minutes left in the game, SAGU’s Adrian Palacios hit a free throw, followed up by a three pointer from Lance Tipton . Next, Josh Swearingin hit a basket to cut SCU’s lead to six, 59-53. The Lions couldn’t keep the momentum and SCU quickly regained a double digit lead.
SAGU had an uncharacteristically poor shooting night. The Lions were 27% from behind the arc, and they were 35% from the field goal range. The biggest difference could have come from free throws. SAGU went 11-for-16 from the free throw line. SCU was 24-for-37 from the line.
SAGU freshman Lance Tipton scored 17 points for the Lions. Keyunta Watkins had 15 points and four steals. Josh Williams had 12 points. Adrian Palacios added 10 points.
SCU’s Marvin White scored 20 points for the Eagles and Jamal Ray wasn’t far behind with 18 points.
The Lions are again on the road on Thursday, February 2, 2017. They play John Brown University at 8pm. JBU is currently 13-8 overall and 5-5 in the SAC.
