Snyder, Texas- September 5, 2015- It was unseasonably warm as the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) cross country team participated in the first  meet of the season.  In Snyder, Texas temperatures topped out near 97-degrees, and with the women running in the heat of the day, it was a meet to remember.

“The women truly had to fight through the heat starting their 5k at 12:15pm.  They got better today, and it makes us appreciate the coolness of our 5:30am practices!  Having these ladies secure the first team championship in school history made the trip well worth it,” says proud coach Jason Covarrubias .

Destiny Garza once again qualified for the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association Cross Country Championship in Houghton, New York.  Garza was the lone qualifier for the Lions.

Five men finished in the top ten for SAGU; Gabriel Price , Gerardo Nava , Adrian Cedilla , Walker Loyd and Brad Beimler .  Five runners finishing in a top ten finish is a first in SAGU history.

“The men have now won one race each year, this is a streak that we would love to keep,” says Covarrubias, “They work hard every morning and to be able to come home with some hardware makes it that much sweeter.”

SAGU will take the next two weeks off of competing.  The next race is on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the East Texas Invitational in New Summerfield, Texas.
