SAGU Cinema Film Follow the Money Wins Award at Worldfest Film Festival

Waxahachie, Texas – July 13, 2023

SAGU Cinema is proud to announce that its latest film, Follow the Money, won a Gold Remi Award for Short Film Dramatic Original from Worldfest Film Festival, which is the oldest independent film festival in the world. This marks a major achievement for SAGU Cinema and its students, who have worked hard to create this unique and engaging work of art.

Follow the Money, first premiering on the SAGU campus in April 2022, stars Patty Pell as a newly widowed grandmother and Kevin Roberts as her grandson, on a journey to track down thousands of dollars she sent to an online scammer. The forty-five minute feature recounts the realistic yet comical journey the two of them take to attempt to recover what has been lost.

The film was created by a group of seven film students over the course of a year and funded by SAGU Cinema. The movie was directed by Will Boone with Harrison Schowengerdt as Director of Photography and Tim Luna as 1st Assistant Director. Schowengerdt also co-wrote the script alongside Boone.  Associate Professor Rob Price served as the crew’s Executive Producer.

“This student crew of seven did the work of a crew of 27,” says Price. “From script to screen they absolutely crushed it at every phase of production and have left behind some big shoes to fill for future students.”

Assistant Director Luna also remarks that working on this film has been an incredible learning experience. “I was able to apply what I’ve learned in my Digital Media Arts classes and see it come alive,” says Luna. “It was satisfying to receive recognition from such a prestigious festival, especially with all the hard work that went into this film.”

As part of their educational journey, SAGU digital media students have been producing films since 2008. In that time, they have developed a strong portfolio of works that have received recognition from various festivals.

Follow the Money has been met with rave reviews from both critics and audiences alike, making it one of SAGU Cinema’s most successful films yet.

SAGU provides valuable education opportunities for aspiring filmmakers through the Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Media Arts. Through this degree plan, students can learn about everything from screenwriting and directing to editing and post-production – all while developing their skills in a supportive environment.
