Waxahachie, TX – February 15, 2024 –Dr. Amanda Lee Hing, the Assistant Music Department Chair and Professor of Piano at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU), embarked on an extraordinary musical journey that took her across the ocean to Northeastern China on December 11, 2023. Partnering with Dr. Christine Tan, Assistant Professor of Piano at the UCSI Institute of Music in Malaysia, they formed a dynamic duo that transcended borders, bringing together their expertise and passion for music.

Over the course of 12 days, Dr. Lee Hing and Dr. Tan graced the stages of Northeast Normal University, Changchun University, and Anshan Normal University. Their recitals featured a diverse repertoire, including compositions by Mike Cornick, Astor Piazzolla, and Dave Brubeck, showcasing the versatility of their musical abilities.

Alongside these performances, Dr. Lee Hing taught three masterclasses on solo piano pieces and piano duets, as well as conducted workshops discussing topics like “Stylistic Practices of Baroque Keyboard Music” and “The Model of Graduate Music Studies in the United States.”

One particularly memorable moment for Dr. Lee Hing was the opportunity to perform as a guest artist on the John Broadwood & Sons piano, a rare instrument from the early 1800s on special display at the World Musical and Cultural Museum in Dalian, China.

An equally significant aspect of the trip was the opportunity for cultural exchange and collaboration with esteemed pianists, musicologists, and scholars during an educational seminar. This gathering served as a platform for mutual learning, fostering a deep sense of connection within the global music community.

Reflecting on the trip, Dr. Lee Hing shared, “The sincerity and passion of fellow musicians and the local students were incredibly touching, leaving me inspired by our collective commitment to the profound impact of music. This experience became a beautiful connection point, bringing together varied cultures and souls through the emotional power of music.”

Through their performances, teachings, and cultural exchanges, Dr. Lee Hing and Dr. Tan created a bridge that transcends boundaries, fostering understanding and appreciation for the rich tapestry of global musical traditions.
