Southwestern Assemblies of God University goes greenWaxahachie, TexasJanuary 31, 2012 - Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Dining Services has implemented a reusable to-go food container program.

“The health and safety of our customers, our employees and our environment always comes first at SAGU Dining Services,” said SAGU Food Service Director Scott Regan. “Through our Green Thread™ environmental stewardship platform, we have chosen to use reusable to-go containers in our dining halls and will continue to look for ways to reduce our environmental impact. This program is yet another example of how we strive to reduce waste and support the sustainability goals of SAGU.”

SAGU Dining Services projects that the to-go container program will divert more than 1,800 disposable containers per week - nearly 28,000 every semester - from entering landfills.

The switch to the reusable to-go containers will reduce SAGU’s environmental impact. The new to-go containers are BPA-free, made of recyclable plastic #5, and are dishwasher safe. They feature a locking lid making them more spill-proof. Aside from reducing the number of disposables used on campus, the program also commits to recycling the containers at the end of their useful life.

The reusable to-go containers are free to students and faculty/staff who are on a meal plan; however, if you lose your container you will have to pay $5 for a replacement. Students can then bring their empty to-go box to the dining hall to be filled and return their used container during their next visit to the dining facility for a sanitized container or a card that can be redeemed for a container. All containers will go through the same cleaning process as the dinnerware used in the residential dining hall.

“We want to make it even easier for our campus community to rethink, reuse, and recycle while rewarding all of the people who do. We are very excited to offer this ‘To-Go’ program to the campus community as a way to further SAGU’s sustainability efforts,” says Regan.
