The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) baseball team finished their series against Huston-Tillotson University winning three of the four games. SAGU bumped their record to above .500 with a new record of 10-8 before conference play starts.
Game one started out with AJ Munoz, Ben Bills, and Tanner Lindle having two hit games with Munoz and Bills both having two RBI’s each and Lindle with one. Derrick Clement, Kyle Coolidge, and Andrew Diaz all went one for three to start the day during the 10-2 outing. Dennis Smith recorded a complete game with a win allowing nine hits, two earned runs while striking out three of the 28 batters.
SAGU completed a sweep for day one behind a huge third inning when the Lions scored six runs. HTU’s defense was shaky as Matt Black threw two wild pitches for two runs and Diaz hit a single to shallow left that scored Coolidge. Diaz had a perfect game going three for three bringing in one run. Houston Johnson and shortstop, Ryan Cole both went two for four to end the day with a .500 batting average. Augie Martinez got the win after striking out eight batters and allowing five earned runs to complete the first day of the series.
Day two started out right where they left off scoring a run in the first and second inning, Lindle doubled to right that would bring Munoz home and Clement singled to center that scored Kyle Contreras . Clement and Sonny Boyd led the way with obtaining two hits each during the 3-2 win. Logan Mann got his second save of the weekend as Bills pitched a near perfect game only giving up three hits and one run in six innings of work.
Huston-Tillotson got a win in the last game of the series 6-11 when Brandon Aquino hit a grand slam. Clement had another double-digit hit game with two, he ranks nationally in triples and total runs scored this season. Damian Garcia was recorded the loss after giving up five runs in 1.1 innings, Lindle gave up zero runs in three innings off work and only three hits.
They’ll be back on the field this weekend as they start conference play at University of Science and Arts ; day one will have one game at 6 pm Friday night and Saturday they will play at 12 pm and 3 pm.
