Calverley, Cox, Kirk, Giese make national grade

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced on Friday that 391 volleyball student-athletes have been named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes.

Hastings College (Neb) and Concordia University (Neb) led all institutions with eight individuals on the list.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University had four NAIA Scholar Athletes make the grade; three seniors and a junior.

Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep), Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS), Alissa Kirk (Pataskala, Oh / Gahanna Christian) and Jessie Giese (Tulsa, Ok / Union HS) are the four Lady Lion members earning the prestigious honor.

Giese (pronounced like Geese) is the junior.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

SAGU is a dual member in both the NAIA and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). The latter has 120 member institutions primarily from the NAIA, NCAA Divisions II and III.

Regionally, the Lions compete in the Sooner Athletic Conference (NAIA) and the Central (NCCAA).
