Waxahachie, Texas- August 25, 2014- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions soccer team is as ready as they will ever be for the 2014 season.  If conditioning is any indication of a successful season, the Lions could have it in the bag.  During pre-season workouts the team woke up for early morning, 8 mile runs.

Last year the team ended with a 4-14 record, going winless in the Sooner Athletic Conference.  Coach Clem Oancea believes the good news is that last year’s leaders return, “I don’t think we’ve lost any key players.  The main guys that have been key factors for the team are still around.”

Four years ago the SAGU Lions went to the NCCAA national tournament.  Six freshmen on that 2010 season are now seniors and Oancea has high expectations RamosCo-captain Jonathan Ramos returns for senior season for their final season, “Out of that group there are quite a few guys that are still around.  They were key players as freshman and went to nationals.  Now that they are seniors here I’ll expect them to come out.”  Senior defenders Will Elliot, Salvador Avila and Jonathan Ramos  along with forwards Jordan Salvato, goalkeeper Cesar Espana, , and midfielder Rolondo Hernandez  all played on that national tournament team and will be returning for their senior seasons.

Robert Ambrosia was forced to play defender last year due to low numbers.  This year low numbers won’t be an issue and Ambrosia will be playing as a forward, where his specialty lies.

Joel Ramirez returns for the 2014 season.  Ramirez was the team leader in goal attempts with 39.  He was  also the team leader in       shot on goals with 21 for the season.

Oancea had a successful recruiting season bringing in more than a dozen new players. With the new talent a  new level of competition   is happening in the Lions practices.  “The guys came in and it’s good to see the  inner squads and how they go after each other to fight   for those 18 traveling spots,” explains Oancea.

The Sooner Athletic Conference pre-season poll placed the SAGU Lions at the bottom of the pack.  If  coaches are casting votes based   on the success of last year’s team; that might be a mistake.  Oancea believes this team is much  different from last season, “We are     very technical and the soccer IQ is much higher than last year.  That’s what we’ve been  recruiting for and trying to get sharper on       that.”
