Kounas scores in last minute to force overtime

SAGU held to two shots on goal, both found the net

avila-at-obuSHAWNEE, Oklahoma  --  Sophomore Lee Kounas (Oak Cliff, Tx / Townview HS) scored the tying goal just 55 seconds before the end of regulation, but it couldn’t prevent Southwestern Assemblies of God University from falling, 3-2, in overtime at Oklahoma Baptist University.

Kounas (KOO-nahs) booted the equalizer at the 89:05 mark during a closing frenzy that gave SAGU great momentum heading into extra time. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Like they did at the start of the game, OBU struck quickly.

Khalil Benalioulhaj sent a pass to Cristobal Allerde on the right side of the goal, and he booted the game-winner just 75 seconds into OT. It was the Lions’ second OT loss.

The defensive game between teams fighting to stay out of the cellar, saw the more physical Bison take the game to SAGU. They had 11 fouls in each half and were also cited for seven offside violations. SAGU had three.

The Lions tied the game at 1-1 on a score by freshman Sandro Salazar (Kissimmee, FL / Gateway HS). The goal, 27:01 into the game, was assisted by Rolando Hernandez (Michoacan, Mexico / Garringer HS).

It was the fourth score of the year for Salazar, tying him with Robert Ambrosie (Lasi, Romania / Richard Wurmbrand HS), who missed the game.

SAGU had a 5-4 advantage in shots at the half, but fell behind when the hosts scored off a corner kick just two minutes before intermission.

The Lions, who had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks, would not allow another goal until OT.

Sophomore goalie Cesar Espana (Katy, TX / Cinco Ranch HS) was solid between the pipes. He was credited with five saves.

OBU finished with a 17-10 margin in shots. They fired eight on goal and limited the Lions to just two – both coming on their two scores. Kounas and Salazar each had three shots.

The Pride, who wore their gold uniforms, dropped to 3-9 overall. It was their seventh straight loss. Outscored 28-10 in the skid, they are 0-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

OBU is now 2-10 and 1-5 in league play.

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday, October 19. They play Northwood University (6-4-1 / 3-1-1 in SAC) at 3:00pm in Cedar Hill.
