Ambrosie, Ramirez score goals for the Lions

Team gets fresh start on Saturday; SAC opener vs OKCU

ramirez-joel-vs-lsusVICTORIA, Texas  --  A year after dominating the University of Houston at Victoria, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University men’s soccer dropped a forgettable 8-2 decision on the coast.

UHV, who now sport an 8-2 record, won their seventh successive game, outscoring their foes by a 26-6 margin in the process. The Lions’ two goals against them were the most by any team during their streak.

SAGU gave up a goal in less than ten minutes and trailed at intermission, 4-0. The Jaguars had a 12-3 advantage in shots at the half, and had collected all four of the game’s cornerkicks. It didn’t get much better for Lions.

UHV had a 17-3 upper hand in shots in the second 45-minute stanza, and added nine more corner kicks. They doubled SAGU in fouls as their physical style took charge of the game.

The Lions broke through for their first goal in the 50th minute when Robert Ambrosie (Lasi, Romania / Richard Wurmbrand HS) found the range. That cut the deficit to 4-1.

Seven minutes later UHV, also a member of the NAIA, broke the game wide open with three scores in a span of just seven minutes.

The Lions netted the game’s final tally on a kick by Joel Ramirez (Red Oak, TX / Red Oak HS). It came in the 85th minute.

Both SAGU tallies were made by sophomores.

The Lions pair of goalies each played a half; Cesar Galvan (Allen, TX / Lovejoy HS) got the start. He yielded four goals and made three saves. Sophomore Cesar Espana (Katy, TX / Cinco Ranch HS) had the exact same numbers in his 45-minute stint.

Sophomore Lee Kounas (Oak Cliff, Tx / Townview HS) led the squad with two shots.

SAGU will be back in action on Saturday when they entertain Oklahoma City University at 3:00pm. The Stars are 3-3 after routing Our Lady of the Lake University, 5-2, on Saturday.

OKCU has scored 11 and permitted the same, while SAGU has 15 goals and given up 20. It will be the opener for both teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
