SAGU takes on St. Thomas, Aug. 23

Co-Captains Galvan, Ramos lead new-look Lions

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The men’s soccer team from Southwestern Assemblies of God University takes to the road in their first four games, starting Friday night in Houston.

The Lions meet the University of St. Thomas at Amateur Sports Park (12211 Kirby Drive, Houston 77045) at 7:00pm. It is the season debut for both teams.

SAGU, 7-11 last fall, are 0-2 against the Celts. The Lions lost 1-0 in 2012 and 2-1 at home in 2011, both times surrendering late goals. UST was 5-10-1 a year ago.

Head Coach Clem Oancea leads a young team that includes eight newcomers. The new-look roster is filled with players who are long on speed and short in height. Only two Lions are six-feet or taller.

During last week’s Media Day, Oancea (WAHN-cha) revealed this year’s Co-Captains. Cesar Galvan (Allen, Tx / Lovejoy HS), the Lions’ lone senior, and Jonathan “Colocho” Ramos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras / Garringer HS), a junior forward, will provide leadership within the squad.

In a scrimmage against Hill College on Tuesday, both led by example. Galvan and Cesar Espana (Katy, Tx / Cinco Ranch HS) teamed up to blank the Rebels, while Ramos assisted a goal by freshman Sandro Salazar (Kissimmee, Fla / Gateway HS).

Lee Kounas (Oak Cliff, Tx / Townview HS) returns for his sophomore campaign. He is the top returning scorer from last year when he booted five goals.

SAGU scored 31 goals last year and allowed 46, while St. Thomas tallied 23 times while yielding 33.

The attached Game Day Preview has the probable starting line-up for the Lions as well as media access to the action. A review of the match will be posted here.

SAGU travels to Kansas next week for a pair of games; August 29 at Southwestern College (Winfield, Ks), Aug. 30 at Sterling College (Sterling, Ks).

The Lions’ home debut is set for September 9 when Dallas Christian College visits Waxahachie for a 5:00pm match. It will be broadcast in HD on SAGU Sports Live.
